Fave Five for 2021
/When we set out to write this recap of our favorite stories from 2021, it seemed a rather simple enterprise. But as we stroll back through 52 weeks of stories about fascinating people, places, and events in Flat Rock, we came to realize that it is almost impossible, and a rather arbitrary exercise, to choose among so many deserving posts. Nonetheless, here is our list for 2021. Five great stories for another great year of bringing you Flat Rock Together. We hope you enjoy this look back into our archives.
Rescued
This was a story that had it all. Compassion, courage, and resilience in the face of extremely challenging circumstances. The story of two “rescues” who met on a dirt road in Georgia and their incredible journey to becoming two of Flat Rock’s best know personalities. The story of Suzanne Camarata and Brown Dog.
Kingdom of the Happy Land
Flat Rock Together was the great beneficiary of many articles written by Missy Izard Schneck in 2021. Her contributions added a depth and dimension to our publication that we greatly appreciate. Many of her contributions deal with the rich history of Flat Rock and “Kingdom of the Happy Land” was a story that not only celebrated the history of our area but helped us more fully understand a part of that history that many did not know.
The story of people who overcame great hardship and incredible odds to create a home in western North Carolina.
A Ridiculously Lucky Vagabond
Scott Treadway might possibly be the most recognizable person in Flat Rock. His decades of stage appearances at Flat Rock Playhouse have delighted hundreds of thousands of theatre goers and helped make the Playhouse the beacon of entertainment and quality theatre that we know today.

The History of the Highland Lake Inn & Resort
The property occupied by, and adjacent to, the Highland Lake Inn & Resort has been at the center of Flat Rock life since 1789 when John Earle built the first grist mill in the area. For 230 years, the land has seen a myriad of property owners, buildings, and uses - all of which helped form and define the history of Flat Rock.
The story of how one of the Southeast’s premier resort destinations flourished out of that expansive history.
