Songs My Daddy Taught Me
The Friends of Music at the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness in Flat Rock will present a concert, “Songs My Daddy Taught Me” on Sunday afternoon, August 11, at four o’clock in the Parish Hall across the street from the church, located at 1905 Greenville Highway in Flat Rock.
Linda Edwards, soprano and pianist Dewitt Tipton will perform familiar songs from the 20’s, 30’s and 40,s and favorite “old time” hymns. In her 50-year music and theatre career, Linda has sung opera, musical theatre, oratorio, recitals, cabaret, and performed as symphony soloist all over the world. She made her international debut in Tel Aviv, with Leonard Bernstein, and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, as Cunegonde in CANDIDE, sang early music as soloist for Aspen Music Festival, and toured Europe as Carlotta in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. As symphony guest soloist, she has sung with conductors John Mauceri, Helmutt Rilling, Sergiu Comissiona, and Keith Lockhart. Opera roles include Norina (DON PASQUALE), Nanetta (FALSTAFF), Sophie (WERTHER), The Witch (HANSEL & GRETEL), and the title role in THE OLD MAID AND THE THIEF. For over 35 years, Linda has performed at Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, in a variety of roles which include Madame Thenardier (LES MISERABLES), Truvy and Clairee (STEEL MAGNOLIAS), Mrs. Potts (BEAUTY & THE BEAST), Fairy Godmother (CINDERELLA), Adelaide (GUYS & DOLLS), Prudie (PUMP BOYS & DINETTES), Ursula (LITTLE MERMAID), and Madame Arcati (BLITHE SPIRIT). She recently received the Southern California Desert Sun Award as Outstanding Actress for her work as Florence Foster Jenkins in SOUVENIR (Coyote Stage Works, Palm Springs). She has performed over 600 performances of MAN OF LA MANCHA across the country.
Mr. Tipton said, “Ms. Edwards is a brilliant singing actress, equally talented in comic and serious theatrical roles. Her credentials are impeccable. I am thrilled that we will perform together again.”
