Holy Hike - St. John in the Wilderness

  • Flat Rock United States (map)

Upcoming Hike:
Carl Sandburg National Historic Site

We will celebrate the partial reopening of the Carl Sandburg National Historic Site with a February 11 Holy Hike. While the main facilities remain closed, the Hikers' Parking Lot is now open and allows access to several trails. The Memminger/Big Glassy Trail is a 3.5-mile loop that has an elevation gain of 639 feet and is rated easy-to-moderate. This trail provides glimpses of creeks and ponds before connecting to an ascent of Glassy Mountain. The Memminger Trail is named for a family with close ties to St. John in the Wilderness, so we challenge hikers to provide history trivia of both the Memmingers and Carl Sandburg as we enjoy views of the French Broad River Valley.

No special hiking gear is required. Please bring water and snacks. Dogs are allowed but must remain on leash. The Hikers’ Parking Lot is located about 1.5 miles from St. John in the Wilderness at 1924 Little River Road. Please note that this parking lot is about one third mile beyond the Main Parking Lot. Since only 24 parking spaces are currently available, we will meet at the church at 10:00am and carpool.
