BRCC – Preservation Week.
April 1-4
Blue Ridge Community College Library invites the public to come and celebrate Preservation Week on campus, April 1-4. We have some amazing festivities lined up! The American Library Association held the first Preservation Week in 2010 to raise national awareness about the importance of preserving historical and cultural records, and the success of the Library’s Preservation Week celebrations since 2023 show that our community is passionate about local history.
Our public events for the week include:
Tuesday (4/1): Come Hell or High Water: Remembering the Great Flood of 1916 (Documentary Screening)
11am-12:15pm
A documentary made by David Weintraub, Executive Director of the Center for Cultural Preservation. The film was made to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Great Flood of 1916. In addition to covering the tragedy of that week over a hundred years ago, the documentary also touches on what we can learn from natural disasters. David will share a few words about the documentary before the screening as well as lead a discussion at the end and share some news about his current oral history project focused on Hurricane Helene.
Thursday (4/3): Local History Fair*
11am-3pm
15+ local history organizations will have tables exhibiting either their organization's history and the work they do or the history they are dedicated to preserving. The fair is meant to highlight all the wonderful preservation work being done in our community by a variety of people and just how many stories and voices they help protect. There will also be handouts available for people to take with them about preserving their own personal/family history if they don't know where to start.
*The fair will be held on both campuses this year on the same day. It will be in the TEDC Building's Conference Hall on our Henderson Campus and in the library on our Transylvania Campus.
Friday (4/4): In My Mother's House: Tracing a Family's History, from Italy to Eritrea (Library Movie Afternoon)
Start Time: 1pm
Our final event will be a screening of In My Mother's House: Tracing a Family's History, from Italy to Eritrea. The documentary provides an intimate view of one woman's journey into understanding her family's past.
